Isometric Grid Support
This update brings support for isometric grids and more grid styling options
If you’ve ever wanted to run an isometric encounter in Owlbear Rodeo today’s update is designed to make that easier than ever.
There’s a few things to go over with the new fine grained grid controls so let’s dig into it.
Isometric Grid Type
Alongside the square and hexagon Grid Type’s you can now select an Isometric option.
This will draw an infinite isometric grid with all your styling applied. It will also allow for proper grid snapping and measurements for an isometric grid.
If you’re familiar with isometric grids you will know that there are actually two standards when it comes to the isometric grid shape.
These two standards come from the different needs between the video game industry and the design industry. In the video game industry it is common for isometric grids to be expanded to fit into square aspect ratio to make it easier to render pixels without issues. A grid drawn in this way is no longer isometric but the game industry still calls them isometric anyway.
Owlbear Rodeo supports both these isometric styles but to avoid confusion they have been split into two terms: Isometric grids created by design programs and Dimetric grids for expanded grids from video games.
Once the Isometric option is selected you can use the Axonometry drop down to change between the two modes.
More Grid Styling
Custom Grid Colors
Previously your grid was limited to a light, dark or highlight color. In this update we’ve added a fourth button that opens a color picker so you can choose any color you wish.
Configurable Grid Line Width
If you’ve ever wanted your grid to be a bit chunkier you now can with the Line Width option.
Dotted Grids
If you like your grids more subtle there is a new Dotted option for the Line Type that allows you to show small dots on the corners of each grid cell.
Other Changes
We’ve also snuck in a few other changes with this update to fix some bugs and to make some things a little easier.
- Fix the alignment controls not working in the Scene importer on the first try
- Added more grid snapping options to hex grids to allow for better snapping for map alignment and joined hexagon clusters
- Add better image validation to prevent unsupported file types from being imported
- Add better controls for the Movement Ruler variant to prevent tokens from being moved when clicking on an overlapping grid cell
- Changed the scale on the Grid Snapping Sensitivity setting to allow more precision and remove unused values.
